Electricity is the driving force of modern civilization as well as the back-bone of all development activities of the country. But the present generation capacity of the country is not sufficient enough to meet the prevailing load demand of the country and causes insurmountable impedance to the development activities in industrial, commercial, agricultural and other social sectors. The Electricity Directorate was established in order 1947 in order to plan and improve supply situation of the then East-Pakistan (Present Bangladesh). Considering the increasing demand of electricity and its importance in agriculture and industry, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was created to ensure the rapid development of power system in 1959. After independence of Bangladesh on 31st May, 1972 by the P.O. No. 59, WAPDA was bifurcated into two parts - Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
